How To Clean Syrup Off Carpet

Syrup can become a sticky mess in a quick hurry, the good news is that there are simple ways to clean it up using products you likely already have around the house. There are a few different ways to clean syrup from your carpet, couch, or clothing items. The first step is always to remove the excess syrup sitting on top of the carpet with a spoon or credit card. Then, you can make a cleaning solution with dish soap and water, among other household cleaners, and/or mix an ammonia solution with ammonia and water to spray on the stain to help break it down. We will cover these cleaning solutions and a few others step-by-step in this article. As a busy mom of three little kids, I have had my fair share of syrup spills!

Cleaning Products for Removing Syrup From Carpet

There are some common household items that will be helpful in cleaning up the spilled syrup. A few of these include:

  1. spray bottle

  2. clean white cloth (white so that the dye from a colored cloth doesn't rub off into the carpet)

  3. dish-soap

  4. an enzyme stain remover (Folex is my favorite. Linked HERE, get it and thank me later, we use it for EVERYTHING!)

  5. ammonia

  6. laundry detergent (powder tide)

  7. baking soda

  8. paper towels

  9. cold water

  10. scrub brush

  11. lysol concentrate disinfectant

  12. white vinegar

  13. rubbing alcohol

Cleaning Up a Fresh Spill

Step 1: The best way to clean up a fresh spill is to start by cleaning up the excess syrup that is sitting on top of the carpet. Using a spoon, or a credit card, scoop up as much of the pancake syrup as you can.

Step 2: Using a paper towel blot the stained area. Avoid rubbing it and spreading the syrup around.

Step 3: Mix together 1 tablespoon of mild dish soap and two cups of cool water. (Make sure to use cold water, hot water will set the stain.) Using a clean rag, dip it in the mixture and start to blot the stain. Dish soap is a great option for cleaning up real maple syrup as dish soap is made to clean up food. If you are dealing with wool carpets, avoid all detergent solution and stick to plain water, other products could damage the wool carpet and should be avoided.

Step 4: Mix together 1 tablespoon of ammonia and two cups of warm water. Put them in a spray bottle and spray it directly on the affected area. Using a clean cloth you can start to scrub. The ammonia will help to break down the syrup and remove it from the carpet.

Step 5: Use a clean, dry cloth to blot the liquid out of the carpet. You can also take a stack of paper towels and put something heavy on top of it to soak up the liquid from the carpet. Give it some time to dry, and you are all done!

Other Cleaning Solutions

  1. Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover (linked HERE. I have personally ordered this exact product listing two different times) Folex is an incredible and fast acting carpet spot remover. Once all the excess syrup has been removed, spray Folex on the spot and scrub with a clean cloth. Leave to dry. (We use Folex for all stains at our house, including couches, and clothing.)

  2. Laundry detergent is a great stain removal. Use a damp rag and dip it into your powdered detergent, powdered tide is my favorite option, then scrub the affected area of your carpet until there is no remaining residue.

  3. Baking soda is a good stain buster, and an all around great cleaning product. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the syrup spill, then using a spray bottle with water, dampen the baking soda and allow it to sit for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Then use a clean towel to scrub. Then you can use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the dried baking soda. Our favorite vacuum cleaner is linked HERE.

  4. DIY carpet cleaning mixture mix the following ingredients: 2 cups of water, 1 cup of white vinegar, 1 capful of lysol concentrate disinfectant, and 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. Add the mixture to a spray bottle. This cleaning solution will eliminate germs, get rid of tough stains, dissolve dirt, and can be used for all kinds of household spills and stains.

Cleaning Up Dried Syrup

Step 1: The first thing to do is remove what you can of the dried syrup without ruining the carpet fibers. Use a dull knife to try and scrape off what you can of the dried, sticky syrup.

Step 2: Mix together 1 tablespoon of ammonia and two cups of warm water. Put them in a spray bottle and spray it directly on the affected area. Using a clean cloth you can start to scrub. The ammonia will help to break down the syrup and remove it from the carpet.

Step 3: Use Folex or Powdered Tide and a damp cloth to scrub the stain until the stain is fully gone.

Step 4: If you are still struggling to remove the stain a scrub brush could be an effective solution. We really like these carpet and upholstery brushes (linked HERE). If you are unable to remove the stain, it may be a good idea to have a professional carpet cleaner come and try to remove the syrup spill from the carpet.

Step 5: Use a clean, dry cloth to blot the liquid out of the carpet. You can also take a stack of paper towels and put something heavy on top of it to soak up the liquid from the carpet. Give it some time to dry, and you are all done!

Top 2 Takeaways

  1. There are plenty of household cleaning items that are useful when working with sticky stains. Try and keep one or more of these solutions on hand as they work well for many types of spills and stains.

  2. Folex is your new BFF. I cannot recommend this product enough. Chocolate milk on the couch? Folex. Indian food on your brand new shirt? Folex. (These are real examples from my personal experience!)
